Harper McFadden

Harper (she/her) first came to Camp Nor’wester as a camper and then returned as a summer staff for 5 years. After her first summer working on the waterfront and leading trips, she quickly fell in love with leading trips and working on the waterfront, realizing that outdoor education was her calling. She shifted her whole career path to dedicate her life to creating meaningful experiences in the outdoors, and has never looked back!

She went on to build a career in outdoor programming, working in schools, mental health treatment centers, adventure sports programs, and nonprofits—most recently serving as a Director of Wild Society. Throughout her career, Harper has developed and led programs that connect people to the outdoors, strengthen team dynamics, and build leadership skills.

Returning to Nor’wester as Camp Director is a full-circle moment for Harper, combining her deep love for camp with years of professional experience in outdoor leadership. Now, she oversees all aspects of staff support and program development, ensuring that Nor’wester remains a place where both campers and staff can grow. She is committed to hiring and training a strong team, fostering a supportive staff culture, and refining programming to create impactful, immersive experiences.

Fun fact: Harper’s name is actually a nickname that she picked when she was a 9-year-old camper in the Archer unit. It has stuck with her ever since and she now goes by Harper all the time!

When not working Harper loves backpacking, skiing, mountain biking, or really any exploring outside, as well as knitting and general crafting, and trying new recipes.

You can email Harper at harper@norwester.org to see what backcountry trip she is currently planning!
