The Work Behind the Magic: Staff Training and Preparing for Summer

Before campers arrive at Camp Nor’wester, something special is already happening on Johns Island. The laughter, songs, adventures, and friendships that define a summer at camp all begin with the incredible work our staff put in during Staff Training.

Staff Training is a time for our team to learn, grow, build community, and prepare for the responsibility of creating a safe, welcoming, and meaningful summer experience for every camper. It takes a lot of effort to get camp ready, not only through setting up tents, organizing program areas, preparing supplies, and bringing the property back to life after the off-season, but also through the thoughtful preparation that happens before staff ever meet campers.

Our staff spend time learning the skills and knowledge needed to support young people with care and confidence. Training sessions cover important topics like abuse prevention, working with kids, safety and risk management, emergency preparedness, camper health, community building, conflict resolution, and so much more. These sessions help ensure that every staff member understands their role in creating a safe and supportive environment where campers can explore, challenge themselves, and grow.

But Staff Training is about more than policies, procedures, and preparation - it’s about becoming a camp community. Some of the most meaningful moments come from the pieces of training that remind us what makes Nor’wester so special. Staff practice do a practice campfire, Chapel, Musicale, Camp Dance, sing songs, and experience the traditions that campers will soon carry forward. Staff learn what words like “Bletch” and “NoFuss” mean, they get to know the property, and learn to settle into the rhythm of camp life so that they can help camper do the came.

These moments help staff connect with one another and understand the spirit of camp: showing up for each other, creating belonging, and making space for joy. The work of preparing for summer is both practical and personal. It’s moving equipment, learning schedules, and organizing details, but it’s also building relationships, creating community, and getting ready to welcome campers into a community where they feel known and valued.

A huge thank you to all of our staff for the time, energy, patience, and care you put into preparing for summer. The magic of Camp Nor’wester doesn’t happen by accident, it happens because a dedicated team comes together before campers arrive and chooses to build something meaningful.

We can’t wait to welcome campers back to Johns Island!
