More Than Helping Hands: Celebrating Nor’wester Volunteers

At Camp Nor'wester, volunteering is never just about checking off a to-do list.

Yes, volunteers help stain buildings, stack firewood, repair trails, prep program spaces, and tackle the endless list of projects that come with caring for a rustic island camp. For others, volunteering looks like serving on the Board of Directors and helping guide camp’s future. Sometimes it means showing up for an alumni event or welcoming staff home to Argyle House after a long week on Johns Island.

No matter the role, every volunteer helps strengthen camp; on top of the physical tasks they help preserve something less tangible: the feeling of community that makes Nor’wester feel like home.

As Volunteer Appreciation Month comes to a close, we want to celebrate the many people who give their time, energy, and heart to this place and recognize that volunteers are essential not only to the physical care of camp, but to the spirit of community that makes Nor’wester so special.

More Than Maintenance

Camp is a living, breathing place. Buildings weather, trails shift, docks need attention, gardens grow, and every season leaves behind work to be done before the next one begins.

As a nonprofit summer camp, Nor’wester relies on community support to help sustain its mission and programming. Donations help cover facilities updates, program supplies, staff support, financial aid, and equity initiatives across camp. Volunteers are a vital part of that same effort, helping care for the physical spaces where campers learn, grow, and belong.

From seasonal Work Weekends to individual volunteer projects, these efforts directly shape the camper experience. A repaired trail becomes the path to an Explorer’s first overnight trip. A cleaned lodge helps prepare for a summer of shared meals and songs. A freshly built circle of tents becomes the setting for friendships that may last a lifetime.

Volunteers help protect the everyday magic.

Volunteers Beyond the Work Crew

While many people picture volunteers with tools in hand, some of Nor’wester’s most important volunteers serve in ways that are less visible but just as meaningful.

Our Board of Directors are volunteers who help steward the long-term health of camp. They provide leadership, oversight, fundraising support, and strategic vision to ensure Nor’wester can continue serving campers for generations to come.

The Camper Voice Council brings campers together during the off-season to stay connected, offer feedback, and help shape the future of the camper experience. Their voices help keep camp rooted in what matters most: the people who call it home.

During the summer itself, volunteers continue to play an important role. In-summer volunteers lend extra hands when camp is in session, supporting everything from special projects to events and behind-the-scenes needs.

At Argyle House, volunteer hosts help create a welcoming and supportive environment for staff, offering connection, care, and a place to recharge during a busy summer season. Supporting staff means supporting campers, too.

And when camp gathers to celebrate major milestones, volunteers help make those moments possible. From reunions to fundraising events to the incredible 90th Anniversary celebrations in 2025, event volunteers bring energy, organization, and community spirit to every gathering.

Building Community While Building Camp

What makes volunteering at Nor’wester special is that the work itself is only part of the story; it is never just about the task..

People come back because camp shaped them. Parents volunteer because they see what camp has given their children. Alumni return because some places never stop feeling like home. Friends of camp join because they believe in what happens here.

Often, they leave with the same thing: a stronger connection.

People work side by side, share meals, tell old stories, meet new friends, and reconnect with the values that make camp feel timeless: service, simplicity, responsibility, and belonging.

That same spirit extends far beyond the summer season.

In many ways, volunteering reflects the same lessons campers learn each summer—that community is built when people show up for one another. Whether someone attended camp last summer, last decade, or this is their first time on Johns we hope volunteering offers a way to engender to that sense of belonging.

Why It Matters

Camp Nor’wester is intentionally rustic, outdoor-centered, and technology-free—a place where campers can build confidence, independence, and meaningful relationships away from screens and daily distractions.

That kind of experience doesn’t happen by accident.

It takes staff who care deeply. It takes donors who believe in the mission. And it takes volunteers willing to show up with work gloves, paint brushes, tools, and open hearts.

Every volunteer contribution, whether it lasts an afternoon or a full Work Weekend, helps ensure campers arrive to a place that feels safe, cared for, and ready for adventure.

It also sends a powerful message: this community lasts.

Thank You

To everyone who has joined a Work Weekend, helped with an island project, supported camp from afar, or simply said “yes” when camp needed an extra hand: THANK YOU!

You are part of what makes Nor’wester possible.

You help maintain the trails, the buildings, and the boats- but you also help maintain the traditions, the memories, and the spirit of camp itself.

Volunteer appreciation is really community appreciation.

And at Nor’wester, that community is everything.
