An Abbreviated History Of The
Henderson Camps and Camp Nor'Wester
As we begin a new chapter of the history of Camp Nor'wester, it is remarkable to look back on the growth and changes of an organization whose traditions now span six decades and three islands.
1981-1989 Camp Nor'wester
David and Susan Formo
1981- David and Susan Formo were hired as directors All wall tents were replaced. A van for the Big Trips was purchased and a solar pool cover was added to heat the pool.
1982- The Cooks' Cabin was expanded. A new, desperately needed, drain field was built north of the stables, with all drainage from the lodge area to the boys' shower house pumped to it. The pack-out shed was built and a second van purchased. A new Lightning sailboat was added. Unit pictures for all campers was begun.
1983- The kitchen was remodeled with an "island," a convection oven, two freezers, etc. Another Lightning was added and a tractor was purchased.
1984- The staff training manual was created and staff training was lengthened to a full week.
1985- The girls' Weaver unit assumed a new name: Archers. A second Boston Whaler and a fleet of 12 mountain bikes were purchased. The "Camp Nor'wester Musicale" tape was originated.
1987- The infamous "changeover day" was eliminated and replaced with a 48 hour space between the first and second sessions. The new calendar format included all the unit pictures. The camp movie was put on VHS video tape. The lodge porch was rebuilt. This was the last year that the camp had access to the Courageous, a 49' sloop used for out camp trips and day sails.
1988- The "Ropes (obstacle/challenge) Course" was established. A Salish-style canoe was carved by Duane Pasco.
1989- The "Nor'wester Eagle" was painted on the bottom of the pool. This was the last year of the Formo directorship.
